"The Film Composer as Rhetor"
(Updated: October 10, 2004)

"The Film Composer as Rhetor," unpublished graduate seminar paper, State University of New York, Brockport, 1976.

When looking at the rhetoric of film, the director is the chief rhetor--the person in charge of the film as a rhetorical artifact of culture. Yet, film actually involves a committee of rhetors with each member contributing expertise in shaping the film. The film composer--the person responsible for shaping auditor's feelings towards and perceptions of the visual elements of the film through the use of music--is a very important committee member.
